Trump went into the conflict with Iran talking about regime change in Tehran. But instead of changing the government in Iran, the political consequences may now be unfolding much closer to home.
The 2026 midterm elections have delivered a major setback to Trump’s political agenda, with Democrats winning control of the Senate. Washington is facing a political shift that Trump may not have expected when his administration became involved in the confrontation with Iran.
The irony is hard to miss. A president who wanted to reshape the political future of another country is now dealing with a changing political landscape in his own capital.
Military power can launch operations, make threats, and create enormous international consequences. But it cannot guarantee political success, either abroad or at home. American voters have their own say, and the midterm results show that presidential power does not mean unlimited political control.
Perhaps the biggest lesson is that leaders who focus on changing governments overseas should never forget that voters at home can change the balance of power too.Failed regime change in Tehran, political change in Washington. What an irony.
